True Grit is a film of superb subtlety. The Coen brothers rarely fail to please, and this production is no different. True Grit an intriguing alternate interpretation of an old classic by the Coen bothers, and is primarily driven by the strong performances of the films actors. The Coen brothers waste no time in introducing the most pertinent character in this film- Mattie Ross, we soon become aware that Ross is no ordinary girl. The film follows the young lady, and her search to find Tom Chaney- her Fathers killer. Ross finds a lawman named Rooster Cogburn- who believe it or not, is every bit as rigid as his name suggests, after a steep negotiation Ross hires him to find Tom Chaney, mainly due to his history of violent behavior. Later in the film, the two are intertwined with Laboeuf- a Texas Ranger, a naive, but brave man.
What most impressed me with this film is the way the story unravels. Every scene is essential, it might sound cliche to call the Coen’s minimalists, but it honestly seems that way. Damon, and Brolin, Bridges, and Steinfield give masterful performances, and the Coen brothers deliver on a well-done cinematic experience.
